Trey Wright won the 2004 U.S. National Scrabble Champion and is also a noted classical concert pianist. His full name is Roger Robinson Wright III, given the name Trey because he is the third generation with the name. Wright played the word "LEZ" on the board, which was a shortened slang term for "lesbian". ESPN network producers and tournament officials did not want to offend any group, and asked Roger Robinson Wright to remove the word and play another. Though Trey Wright did so, he became the focus of controversy in such media outlets as USA Today and the BBC. Trey Wright BioRoger Robinson Wright III was born in Houston, Texas and began to study the piano at the age of 12. By the age of 18, Roger Wright was making his concert debut. Trey Wright studied piano at the University of Houston, where he earned his bachelors degree in music. Wright would later earned a Master of Music degree at Rice University in Houston, and move on to doctoral work at U.S.C. in Los Angeles. Career as a PianistTrey Wright has performed on four continents, Europe, North America, Australia and Africa. He has appeared on PBS and has been reviewed by the Washington Post, among other publications.
