Besides his commentary on competitive Scrabble, Stefan Fatsis is a Scrabble player on high levels of the Scrabble tournament circuit. Stefan Fatsis placed 19th in Division 3 of the 2005 U.S. National Scrabble Championship. He is currently ranked 2nd among Scrabble players in Washingon, D.C.

Word Freak

Word Freak was a non-fiction title published in 2001. Word Freak details a short history of Scrabble, the behind-the-scenes organization of U.S. Scrabble tournaments and some of the personal politics of the SCRABBLE subculture. Word Freak is noted for its humorous look at the sometimes obsessive personalities which dominate the American Scrabble scene.

Beyond the story of the top level Scrabble competitors, Word Freak also details how Stefan Fatsis transformed himself from a good living room Scrabble player in an officially recognized Scrabble expert who plays in the 2nd and 3rd divisions of national tournaments.
