The first time Paul Phillips's outspoken nature revealed itself was his criticism of the Horsheshoe Casino in Las Vegas, due to the way it split the entry fees between players and casino employees.

The second incident came when the 2005 World Series of Poker included Johnny Chan, Doyle Brunson and Phil Hellmuth Jr. in its Tournament of Champions event. The Tournament of Champions is meant for the players who won an event at that particular WSOP. Chan, Brunson and Hellmuth had not won an event at the 2005 World Series of Poker. The three shared the record for most events won over a career at the WSOP, so Paul Phillips was speaking about the casino breaking its own rules to let "star" players into their event.

Paul Phillips was born in 1972 in San Francisco. He attended the University of California at San Diego, which is where Phillips discovered his love of blackjack and poker. These days, Paul Phillips and his family life in Colorado, though they lived in Oregon in the years prior. Phillips has a wife and young daughter.

Paul Phillips is one of the most accessible poker and Scrabble players, because he is active in a number of internet bulletin boards and message boards. Phillips wrote for the Boa web server and was the chief technical officer of the GO2NEt in the 1990's.
