The World Scrabble Championship

The World Scrabble Championship is a relatively new international tournament. For that reason, the WSC is not always considered the most prestigious international competition. Because it is associated with Hasbro Games and because of the impressive title of this bi-annual tournament, though, the World championships is becoming a major event which all the best players attend.

As stated above, The World Scrabble Championship is held every other year. This has been the format since 1991, the first year of the tournament. Since that time, nations will send teams of Scrabble players to the event. Several nations boast its own winner of the World Scrabble Championship, a distinction which New Zealand can now boast.

Mumbai, India

Mumbai, India was the host of this year's World Scrabble Championship. Those with limited knowledge of India might not be too familiar with the city, though it is considered the financial capitol of India. Hasbro chose Mumbai to host the WSC in order to promote SCRABBLE in India, which has a growing Scrabble community.

New Zealand's Own

Nigel Richards continues to play international Scrabble events under the New Zealand banner, though he has not lived in New Zealand for the past seven years. Instead, Nigel Richards resides in the city of Kuala Lampur in Malaysia.

Before moving to Malaysia, Nigel Richards worked in water treatment for the city of Christchurch City, New Zealand. He remains a member of the Christchurch Scrabble Club. As of 2007, Nigel Richards is 40 years old.
