Joel Sherman - World Scrabble Champion

Joel Sherman won the 1997 World Scrabble Championship and was the 2002 U.S. National Scrabble Champion.

Featured in Word Freak and Word Wars

Joel Sherman has been featured in two major projects about the world of Scrabble. Joel was one of the SCRABBLE competitors highlighted in the book "Word Freak" by Stefan Fatsis in 2001.

The full name of Word Freak is Word Freak: Heartbreak, Triumph, Genius and Obsession in the World of Competitive Scrabble Players.

Joel Sherman also was featured in the 2004 documentary movie "Word Wars". Word Wars was directed by Eric Chaikin and Julian Petrillo. The movie focuses on the obsession of Scrabble players for their chosen word game.

The full name of Word Wars is Word Wars: Tiles and Tribulations on the Scrabble Game Circuit.

GI Joel

Joel Sherman has been nicknamed "GI Joel". This would sound like a great nickname to have--conjuring up images of a hard-as-nails competitor or a patriot--until you learn the origin of the nickname.

G.I. in this case stands for "gastro-intestinal", as in gastrointestinal reflux syndrome. I guess you couldn't have too much of a tough guy in our great game of Scrabble.
