Popcap Games doesn’t offer a version of Scrabble, but the games they do offer are so great that I just had to write about the company. Bookworm is the best-known Popcap word game, and it’s similar to Scrabble Blast. I’ve spent hours playing Bookworm, and so have my daughters. It’s worth trying if you like video games with words.

About Popcap Games

Popcap Games is a Seattle, Washington based video game design company. They specialize in offering free versions of their games that only offer limited play–to get full access to their games, you have to buy them. (Their games are so much fun that they’re worth paying for. I got Plants Versus Zombies for Christmas, and it’s since become my favorite tower defense style game of all time.)

The company employs over 400 people, and their annual revenues exceed $100 million. The company was founded in 2011. Their flagship video game is Bejeweled, which is insanely popular.

I don’t like Bejeweled as much as their other games, but that’s because I’m not good at it. I can’t get a handle on the implications of each of my moves. That eliminates the skill element. I might as well play slot machines.

What Platforms Do Popcap Games Work On?

Popcap offers video games for the following devices:

  • PC
  • Mac
  • XBox
  • XBox 360
  • Playstation 3
  • Cell Phones
  • PDAs
  • iPod
  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Android

If you have a device that you can play video games on, you can probably play Popcap’s games.

Bejeweled

The first big hit for Popcap Games was Bejeweled, which is a puzzle game that was released in 2001. Bejeweled has been downloaded over 150 million times, and over 25 million copies of the game have been sold. At first, Bejeweled was called Diamond Mine, but when Popcap Games partnered with Microsoft to offer the game to Microsoft users, Microsoft suggested the new name, and it stuck.

The object of Bejeweled is to swap adjacent gems in order to form rows of three like gemstones. These matching gemstones disappear, which rearranges the layout of the rest of the gems. The gems fall down to where the disappeared gems used to be.

Other Popcap Games

Popcap has designed and distributed dozens of games–more than I want to list here, and more than you want to read about. Instead, here is a list of the Popcap games that I’ve played and enjoyed:

  • Bejeweled
  • Bookworm
  • Peggle
  • Plants Versus Zombies

I discussed Bejeweled, Bookworm, and Plants Versus Zombies earlier in this post. So I’ll discuss Peggle now.

The best word I can some up with to describe Peggle is “addictive.” EVERYONE in my family (except my wife, who doesn’t play video games, period, ever) plays Peggle on my iPad. And all of us have spent hours on the game.

Peggle is a video game version inspired by Pachinko, but with special characters you can unlock who enable you to do special things. Your goal in each level is to touch each of the orange pegs with your ball, which shoots from a shooter at the top and then falls down, bouncing off the walls and pegs as it goes.

Popcap Games Coupons – 2011 Discounts

Retailmenot is my favorite place to look for coupons of any kind, and they do have a page dedicated to 2011 Popcap Games coupons. What I like most about their site is that it’s community driven. People post coupon codes, and then they rate whether or not these coupon codes worked when they tried to use them. The higher the percentage of successes, the higher the coupon code ranks on the list.

The average discount there (as of February 8, 2011) is $4.

They only have moderate success rates for most of their Popcap Games coupon codes though. Only a single coupon code had an 80% or higher success rate, and the other coupon codes had a 50% or lower success rate.

If you want to try some Popcap Games at a discount, click on the ad below this line of text. You’ll save 30% on three of their games, and you’ll get a feel for what you can expect from their other games:
