Mansions of Madness from Fantasy Flight Games is supposed to have a release date of sometime in Q1 of 2011, so the clock is ticking. I know that some games stores are going to have special preview events on the weekend of February 19 and 20, so the release date can’t be too far away now. I’m hoping to be able to order copies of Mansions of Madness by next week or the week after.

I’ve been a fan of Cthulhu and Lovecraft inspired games since I was a teenager. I think I bought my first copy of the Call of Cthulhu RPG when I was only 15 or 16, and we had more fun playing that game than any other RPG ever, including Runequest, Dungeons and Dragons, or Traveller. I wasn’t as interested in board games in those days, but now, my friends and I get together to game every Sunday. And we’re as likely to play a board game or a card game as we are to play an RPG. (Less prep time required.)
Mansions of Madness is going to be a boardgame for 2 to 5 players. The game takes 2 hours to play, and it’s aimed at players age 13 and higher. One player takes the role of the Keeper, who has a nefarious plot to complete. The other players are investigators who are trying to thwart the Keeper’s dastardly plans.
The game will include the following components: a rulebook, an investigator guide, a keeper guide, 8 investigator miniatures, 24 monster miniatures, 300 cards, 200 tokens/markers, 15 map tiles, 70 puzzle tiles, and a ten-sided die.
One of my other projects is an actual brick and mortar horror bookstore, and I’m sure that we’ll have the game available for purchase there. We have an irregular gaming group that gets together there, and I’m sure we’ll host some demo games too. I’m writing about the Mansions of Madness game release date here though because I want to help spread the word about what looks like it might be one of the coolest board games ever.
